Interim Financial Accountant (fixed term contract)

McVeagh Fleming is a large full-service firm that has been operating in Auckland for over 100 years and has offices in Auckland CBD, Albany and Manukau.

The opportunity

We are seeking a highly qualified individual to fill the position of Interim Financial Accountant on a temporary basis to cover parental leave. We are looking for someone who can step into this role seamlessly and continue to drive our financial strategies forward during this temporary period. 

A legal background is essential, as is experience with financial management software and practice management systems (Aderant ideally). Reporting to the General Manager, this is a fixed-term contract for 14 months, starting 16 September 2024. The role is office-based, working from our CBD office.

Key Responsibilities:
•    Oversee all financial operations and direct corporate financial planning and structure.
•    Coordinate, analyse, and report the financial performance to management, partners and the Board. 
•    Ensure that the firm's financial systems are robust, compliant, and support current activities and future growth.
•    Lead and manage a finance team of six, providing direction, guidance, and mentorship.
•    Prepare and file Inland Revenue Department tax returns, fringe benefit returns and resident withholding tax returns.
•    Develop financial strategies by forecasting capital, facilities, and staff requirements.
•    Prepare and present monthly and annual financial statements.
•    Manage budgeting processes, including budget preparation, monitoring, and adjustments.
•    Preparation of monthly statements, Law Society reports and regulatory filings.
•    Ensure compliance with financial regulations and standards.

About you:
•    Proven experience as a Financial Accountant or a similar leadership role from the legal industry. 
•    CA/CPA or equivalent qualified finance professional with an in-depth knowledge of corporate finance and accounting principles, laws, and best practices.
•    Strong financial analysis, budgeting, and forecasting skills.
•    Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
•    Excellent communication skills with the ability to present complex financial information clearly and effectively.
•    Strong organisational and time management skills with the ability to prioritise and manage workloads, meet deadlines and adapt to changing circumstances.
•    Experience with financial management software and systems, Aderant preferred.
